Pandemic

A Good Day in Politics

The 1.9 trillion covid relief bill passed the Senate on Saturday with no Republican senators voting for it. They bitched and asked for amendments added to the bill. But once added, still didn’t vote for it. The bill it went to the House today, and was passed without any Republican members voting for it.

Merrick Garland was confirmed by the Senate today as Attorney General with a vote of 70/30.

Lunch With Friends Matt and Lannie

Matt and Lannie who lived behind us in Colorado, moved in November to St. George, Utah They came to Las Vegas for the weekend to stock up on alcohol (Utah, ya know), and to eat at a nice restaurant. So on the way back to St. George, we went to lunch with them at the Cornish Pasty Company. They have been to England few times, and love the food, so thought they would enjoy it.

Matt works in the hospitality industry, and with covid, lost his job. He had to move where he could get a job, so that was St. George.

The Cornish Pasty originates from Cornwall (Southwest England) and can be traced back as far as the 1200’s. Mining was once a thriving industry in Cornwall and at that time pasties were baked by the wives and mothers of the tin miners. Pasties were made with a thick crimped edge along one side so the miners could use the crimp as a handle to hold on to while eating. The miners hand would often be covered in arsenic from the mine, so the miners would discard the handle when they were done. The crusts were never wasted though, as many miners believed that ghosts, or ‘knockers’, inhabited the mines, and the leftover crusts would keep these ghosts content. Traditionally, pasties were made with different fillings at each end. One end containing meat and vegetables, and one end with a sweet filling. The sweet end would be marked with an initial so the miners knew what side to eat first. Today, Cornish pasties are filled with steak, potatoes, swede (rutabaga) and onions. At one time Cornwall had nearly 2000 flourishing tin mines, but by the 1880’s tin mining had become a rapidly declining industry. At this time, Cornish miners began emigrating to Michigan’s Upper Peninsular for copper mining bringing pasties with them.

Janis got lucky again!

After bowling on Wed night at the Orleans, we went to the casino to see if we could play pai gow there. There was only 1 spot open, so I told Janis to go play while I read a book on my kindle/phone.

She didn’t want to but sat down to play, and on the first hand got dealt a straight flush! (100 to one on the bonus). She had 2 dollars down on the bonus so got $200.00 for that.

Orleans has plexiglass separators on all of their tables which is better than Silverton, which just lets 3 people play at a table.

Lakers Win the NBA Championship!!

The Lakers won the 2020 NBA championship today with a 106-93 rout of the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the NBA Finals. It was a unique accomplishment for this tightly knit group isolated for 95 consecutive days in Florida, playing a season that covered more than a calendar year because of the pandemic. Playing without fans.

68,961 and counting

68,961 deaths. In less than six weeks. Let that number set in.

Our two bowling leagues has been cancelled. Our favorite Mexican restaurant, Ricardos, is closing their doors after 40 years as they can’t figure out how to exist with the new rules restaurants have to abide by to reopen.

They would need put up plexiglass partitions between each booth, along with other things that I guess are too cost prohibitive. They are probably a long list of others that aren’t going to open when and IF they get the order.

I wrote this blog yesterday, but hadn’t published it yet. Tonight we went to Ricardo’s and got some take out, and I picked up a nice collectible
